What is witchcraft? Witchcraft has a number of different definitions. It can mean the casting of spells, or the use of magical or supernatural powers. No two definitions are the same & though the term is neutral & spells can be good or bad, people often associate it more with evil spells that are designed to inflict harm.
Once upon a time long, long ago, it was ok to be a witch, or a wizard or whatever a magical practitioner wanted to call themselves. Pagan civilisations employed such practitioners to ensure a bountiful harvest & to protect them in battle.
After the rise of Christianity such practices began to be vilified. Pagans often worship the horned god & this gave rise to the belief that such people were actually devil worshipers.
At first the new Christian church tolerated such practices or carried out mild punishments. There is also some evidence of Christian clergy themselves following some ancient pagan rites. However in the 13th century witchcraft began to be perceived as a threat & persecutions of those carrying out any kind of spell-craft began in the 15th century on the premise that such people must be in league with the devil. Another theory is that alleged witches were targeted because they were female healers & midwives who were a seen as a threat to the new & male dominated medical profession. Estimations of how many were put to death differ wildly, from as many as 100,000 to as few as 500.
Negative stereotypes aside, there are many witches alive & well today, many of whom follow the pagan religion of Wicca & have probably never thought about riding a witches’ broomstick. After the repeal of the anti-witchcraft laws more information began to become public about Wicca as a religion although for those practicing as part of a group or coven there is still an initiation & mystery surrounding the rites. Although they are two different entities, it is not necessary to follow Wicca to be a witch & not all Wiccans consider themselves to be witches, the two are intrinsically linked.
Wiccans certainly do not worship the devil, in fact they do not believe in the concept of the devil. They do believe in both the masculine & the feminine aspects of deity, in connection with the four natural elements of fire, water, earth & air & in spirit which makes up the fifth point of the pentagram. A Wiccan is extremely unlikely to cast a negative spell since they believe in the power of threefold return where whatever energy one puts out into the world be that negative or positive is returned to them times three. There is no Bible, Torah or Koran, only the Book of Shadows which is an initiate’s own personal journal which is often copied by hand from the book belonging to the person who initiated them into the group. For solitary witches their Book of Shadows acts more like a personal journal.
Wiccans follow the wheel of the year calendar & today celebrate Halloween, which has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, as a kind of thanksgiving festival, so Halloween is the perfect time to don a witch costume.
Of course there’s a world of difference between real & costume witches & we’re not suggesting that you need to cast any real spells. We just want you to dress up & have a good time.
